3,4-Diacetoxy-1-butene (3,4-DAB) is a palladium complex that has been shown to be an effective catalyst for the conversion of butanediol to 2,5-hexanedione. 3,4-DAB is used in the synthesis of polyclonal antibodies and has been shown to have antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli strains. 3,4-DAB can also be used as a radical prostatectomy agent because it inhibits efflux pump activity in the P. aeruginosa cells. This inhibition leads to leakage of intracellular hydrogen chloride ions and subsequent cell death. The reaction between 3,4-DAB and hydrogen chloride produces hydroxy groups that can react with penicillin binding proteins on bacterial cell walls. When this occurs, the bacteria are killed by lysis or by inhibiting protein synthesis.
