Description

Dihydroergotamine mesylate is a medication that is used in the treatment of migraines. It belongs to the group of drugs called ergot alkaloids and has been shown to have high values in cerebral metabolism. Dihydroergotamine mesylate has also been shown to have an effect on dopamine levels in human serum, which may be due to its ability to inhibit neuronal death. Dihydroergotamine mesylate is administered intravenously, orally or intramuscularly for the treatment of acute migraine attacks. The drug can also be given rectally for the prevention of chronic migraine episodes. This drug may cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting and dizziness.
