Description

20,22-Dihydroxycholesterol is a reaction intermediate in the biosynthesis of cholesterol. It is formed as a side product during the synthesis of cholesterol and is converted to hydroxylated cholesterol by oxidation. 20,22-Dihydroxycholesterol is typically found in human serum after incubation with ultraviolet light. This compound has been shown to be synthesized by the mitochondria from dihydroxycholesterol, which is a reaction product of cholesterol synthesis. The enzyme cytochrome P450scc catalyzes the conversion of 20,22-dihydroxycholesterol to dihydroxycholesterol.
