2,3-Dimethoxy-5-methyl-1,4-hydroquinone (DMOH) is a chemical compound that has been shown to inhibit the mitochondrial respiratory chain. DMOH binds to ubiquinol and prevents electron transfer from ubiquinol to cytochrome c. This inhibition leads to a decrease in the membrane potential of mitochondria and disrupts cellular energy production. DMOH has been shown to inhibit tumor growth by causing oxidative injury and has been used as an antitumor agent in mice. DMOH also inhibits cell signaling pathways such as PI3K/Akt and MAPK pathways by inhibiting the transcription of proteins that are regulated by these pathways.
