N,N-Dimethyl-5-nitrotryptamine (DMT) is a tryptamine with psychotropic properties. It has been shown that DMT inhibits the decarboxylase enzyme and serotonin synthesis in plants. DMT also has an inhibitory effect on gramine synthesis, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the activity of the hydroxylase enzyme that catalyzes this reaction. The mechanism of inhibition is still unclear, but it may be due to competition for substrate or inhibition of the mechanistic enzyme. In animal studies, DMT has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on serotonin synthesis through its action on lipoprotein receptors.
DMT is found in many places throughout nature and has been isolated from human blood plasma and cerebrospinal fluid.
