N,N-Dimethyltetradecylamine is a detergent additive that is used to improve the foaming and emulsifying properties of detergent compositions. It has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi, which may be due to its ability to disrupt membrane integrity. The most likely mechanism of action is through protonation of the hydroxyl groups on the N,N-dimethyltetradecylamine molecule. This also increases its solubility in water and surfactant systems. The use of N,N-dimethyltetradecylamine can be improved by combining it with benzalkonium chloride or hydrochloric acid, which will help to increase its antimicrobial activity.
