• Description: 5,6-Dinitrobenzimidazole is an antibacterial agent that has been shown to be active against gram-negative bacteria. It is used as a drug in the treatment of colorectal adenocarcinoma and argon gas has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in vitro. 5,6-Dinitrobenzimidazole also inhibits DNA ligase activity and chloride channels, which may be responsible for its anticancer properties. 5,6-Dinitrobenzimidazole is not active against eukaryotic cells because it lacks a vitamin B12 cofactor.
