4,5-Dimethoxy-2-nitrobenzyl alcohol is a tetrahydrofuran that has photochemical properties. It reacts with uv irradiation to form a hydrodynamic diameter of 6 nm, which is the size of many viruses. The compound can be used as a contrast agent for light microscopy and electron microscopy, or it can be used as a proton donor in organic synthesis. 4,5-Dimethoxy-2-nitrobenzyl alcohol is also used in the laboratory for patterning surfaces by refluxing and expressed as an acid chloride. This product has been shown to react with chloride ions under irradiation to form 6-nitropiperonyl alcohol, which is a molecule that absorbs light at 300 nm and fluoresces at 430 nm. This compound can be cleaved from its substrate by light exposure, making it possible to use this product in photocleavable reactions.
