- Benzoic amide, 2,3-dihydroxy-
- Trencam-3,2-Hopo
2,3-Dihydroxybenzamide is a chemical compound that is used as an antimicrobial agent. It has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against HIV-infected cells in tissue culture. 2,3-Dihydroxybenzamide inhibits the uptake of iron by human pathogens by binding with the iron and preventing its uptake into the cell. The coordination geometry of 2,3-dihydroxybenzamide is octahedral with the nitrogen atoms occupying two axial positions in a square plane. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed that it binds to ferric iron and prevents its oxidation to ferrous iron. Kinetic data shows that 2,3-dihydroxybenzamide has an uptake rate of 0.076 mmol/L/min in tissue culture medium at 37°C and pH 7.4.
