It has been shown to have biochemical properties that are similar to adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Dimethylpropiothetin hydrochloride has been shown to be effective against insect pests and marine microorganisms. This drug binds with fatty acids in the cell membrane of insects, which causes their death. Dimethylpropiothetin hydrochloride also increases the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid in marine bacteria and chlorophyll A in plants.
