Description

Dimethicone is a silicone-based polymer that is used in cosmetic formulations as an emollient and skin protectant. Dimethicone can be found in hair care products, such as shampoos and conditioners, to provide slip and reduce static electricity. It may also be used in sunscreens to absorb ultraviolet light. This material is not absorbed by the skin but remains on its surface, which helps prevent water loss from the body. In addition, dimethicone has been shown to have some antibacterial activity against bacteria found on the skin. The bactericidal effect of dimethicone is due to its ability to bind with proteins and prevent them from functioning properly.
