Dimethyl 1,1-cyclopropane diformate is the cyclopropane analog of dimethyl malonate. It is a biomolecular reagent that can be used to activate acyl groups. This reagent has been shown to induce tumor cell death in vivo as well as to inhibit tumor growth in vitro and in vivo. Dimethyl 1,1-cyclopropane diformate activates acyl groups with alkali metal halides or amines. The process of activation involves an electron transfer from the donor substrate to the activated acceptor, which induces the formation of a covalent bond between the two substrates. This reaction is catalyzed by various enzymes such as carboxylesterases and phosphatases, which are specific for each substrate.
