- Thiophene, 2,5-dichloro-
2,5-Dichlorothiophene is an efficient synthetic method for the preparation of sodium sulfide. It has been used as a building block for other syntheses, such as the synthesis of chalcones. The antimicrobial activity of 2,5-dichlorothiophene is due to its chlorine atom and alkoxy radical. The chlorine atom can react with thiols in bacterial cells and the alkoxy radical can react with proteins. This reaction leads to cell death or inhibition of protein synthesis, which prevents the bacteria from reproducing. 2,5-Dichlorothiophene has also been shown to have cancer resistance properties due to its ability to inhibit protease activity.
