The reaction mechanism of this process involves the conversion of 3,4-dichloropropiophenone to a tetranuclear thiolate complex which then reacts with the halogenated compound to form an imine. This imine is hydrolyzed by hydroxide ion to produce a chlorine-containing product and ammonia. 3,4-Dichloropropiophenone has also been shown to have antimalarial activity.
