3,4-Dichlorobenzyl bromide (DB) is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme desymmetrization that is responsible for the conversion of glucose to glycogen. DB has been shown to inhibit the growth of leukemia cells in vitro in pharmacological assays. The use of DB may be promising for the treatment of leukemia and other cancers. DB inhibits tumor growth by binding to an allosteric site on CRTH2 which prevents it from converting retinol to retinoic acid, and thereby inhibiting cell proliferation. DB is also a potent inhibitor of tuberculosis bacteria, and has been shown to inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains with varying degrees of potency.
