Description

2,4-Dimethylaniline is an organic compound that has a chiral center. It is an aromatic amine that can undergo oxidation to produce 2-methylaniline. It is used as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals and dyes. 2,4-Dimethylaniline undergoes irreversible oxidation when subjected to heating or ultraviolet light to produce 2-methylaniline. This reaction is due to intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the two molecules. The reactivity of 2,4-dimethylaniline depends on its environment, with low energy reactions occurring in the presence of amines and nitrogen atoms and high energy reactions occurring in the absence of these compounds. A typical reactive transfer mechanism for this reaction is shown below:
