Diethyl maleate is a glutathione-like molecule that interacts with the copolymer to form a substrate film. Diethyl maleate is converted to diethylmaleate by the enzyme glutathione reductase, which is then converted to an alkanoic acid by the enzyme cytochrome P450. This process of converting glutathione-like molecules into other forms of glutathione has been shown to have a protective effect against radiation in k562 cells. The conversion of glutathione-like molecules into other forms of glutathione may also have anti-cancer effects, as it has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of human colon cancer cell lines.
