2,6-Dimethylhydroquinone is a chemical compound that is structurally similar to 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethylbenzoic acid. It has been shown to inhibit the fertility of rats and mice at sublethal doses. 2,6-Dimethylhydroquinone has also been shown to have an effect on locomotor activity in mice. This compound interacts with kappa-opioid receptors, which are found in the central nervous system and control pain perception. 2,6-Dimethylhydroquinone binds to these receptors and inhibits protein synthesis by affecting transcription elongation and translation. This drug also induces apoptosis in cancer cells by forming hydrogen bonds between their hydroxyl groups and proteins.
