2,2-Dimethylbutyric acid is a chemical intermediate that has high values in the microprocessor industry. It is also used in pharmaceutical dosage forms as a drug carrier for pravastatin. 2,2-Dimethylbutyric acid has been shown to inhibit cholesterol synthesis by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase. This inhibition of cholesterol synthesis reduces the production of fatty acids and leads to an increase in 2-phenylbutyric acid levels, which may be responsible for its effect on lipid metabolism. Clinical development of 2,2-dimethylbutyric acid is ongoing in Sprague-Dawley rats.
