1,3-Diphenyl-1,3-propanedione (DBP) is used in the synthesis of benzoate, which is a monosodium salt that binds to response elements. The DBP was shown to induce apoptosis and neuronal death in human carcinoma cell lines. DBP has also been shown to have a cytotoxic effect on cultured human osteoblasts by inhibiting mitochondrial membrane potential and inducing DNA damage. This compound is not active against cancer cells that lack dibenzoylmethane activation or brain cancer cells that do not express the response element.
