2,3-Dimethyl-5-nitroindole (DMN) is a synthetic compound that has been reported to be effective against plant diseases caused by bacteria. DMN can be synthesized from dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate and cinnoline. DMN has been shown to possess x-ray crystal structures that are similar to those of the natural product nitrobenzene. The electron density maps at the 2,3-dimethyl position of DMN show a clear indication of an electron withdrawing group, which may be responsible for its high efficiency as a photolytic agent. This molecule also possesses nucleophilic capabilities and is catalytically reduced by sodium chloride in the presence of an iron catalyst. The reaction yields DMN with a nitro group at the 2 position and chloride at the 3 position.
