2,2-Diphenylethanol is an organic compound that belongs to the class of primary alcohols. It is a colorless liquid with a viscosity of 1.06 cP at 25°C and a boiling point of 124°C. 2,2-Diphenylethanol reacts with amines to form diphenylalkylamines, which are used in pharmaceuticals as tranquilizers and antihistamines. 2,2-Diphenylethanol also accepts chloride ions from hydrogen chloride to form diphenylchloroethane. This reaction can be catalyzed by acid or base. 2,2-Diphenylethanol has been observed reacting with carbon sources such as ethylene glycol and ethanol in ring-opening reactions to form polymers containing repeating units of phenylethylene.
