4,6-Dimethyl-2-sulfanylpyridine-3-carbonitrile is a precursor to the anticancer drug doxorubicin. It can be synthesized from acetaldehyde and halides, such as chlorosulfonic acid. This compound has shown anticancer activity in vitro against a variety of human cancer cell lines, including Hodgkin's lymphoma cells. 4,6-Dimethyl-2-sulfanylpyridine-3-carbonitrile has also been used as an intermediate to prepare other compounds that inhibit translation and protein synthesis. The preparative method for this compound involves converting it into the polyester first with ethyl formate followed by phenol and then reacting with sulfur chloride.
