Diethyl 2-ethyl-2-phenylmalonate is a synthetic fatty acid ester that is used as a linker to connect zinc powder with a hydrocarbon group. It has been shown to be an effective catalyst for the thermal expansion of polyurethane and polyisocyanurate insulation foam. Diethyl 2-ethyl-2-phenylmalonate has also been shown to have antiinflammatory and antidepressant effects. This compound is composed of two isomers: cis and trans. The cis isomer has more potent antiinflammatory properties than the trans isomer, but both are capable of inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis in vitro.
