N,N-Dimethyl-guanidine is a quaternary ammonium compound that binds to the amino group of intracellular adenosine and inhibits its function. It has been shown to induce apoptosis in cultured cells through an unknown mechanism. N,N-Dimethyl-guanidine has also been shown to inhibit cancer growths in mice by inducing apoptosis. The drug is effective against various cancers, including breast cancer and leukemia. N,N-Dimethyl-guanidine can be used as a probe for reaction products in pharmaceutical preparations. The drug can be used to prepare samples for high resolution x-ray crystallography studies or molecular modeling by reacting with amines on the surface of proteins or peptides.
