Dimethyl disulfide is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water. It has many uses, including wastewater treatment and the production of other chemicals. Dimethyl disulfide has been shown to react with sulfide ions to form dimethyl sulfide in a reaction solution. This reaction may be used as an analytical method for the determination of sulfides in water samples. Dimethyl disulfide also reacts with the disulfide bond present in proteins and nuclei to produce dimers, which can be detected by electron microscopy or multivariate logistic regression analysis.
