4-(Difluoromethoxy)benzaldehyde is a hydroxy-substituted aromatic compound. It can be synthesized by the reaction of benzene with fluorine gas and difluoromethoxybenzene in the presence of aluminum chloride. The compound is a clear liquid with an odor reminiscent of bitter almond. It has been used as an industrial solvent and as a precursor in the synthesis of other chemicals. 4-(Difluoromethoxy)benzaldehyde can be converted to 2-fluoro-3-phenylpropionic acid by catalytic hydrogenation at room temperature, which is useful for the synthesis of phenylacetic acid derivatives. The compound has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory activities that are due to inhibition of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes.
