1,3-Diisopropylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate is a synthetic compound that acts as a potent inhibitor of collagen-induced muscle contraction. It binds to the active site of the enzyme RNA polymerase, which prevents the formation of messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) and thus protein synthesis. The compound also has been shown to inhibit matrix metalloproteinases and signal pathways, which are involved in the development of liver fibrosis. 1,3-Diisopropylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate is orally administered and has been shown to enhance the growth factor mediated signal pathways in T6 mouse hepatocytes. 1,3-Diisopropylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate is not toxic to cells in culture at concentrations up to 10 mM.
