1,3-Di(2-pyridyl)-1,3-propanedione is a toroidal molecule with a wide range of luminescent properties. It is synthesised from 4-bromopyridine and pyrrole in a two step process. The first step is the formation of the bromo pyridine which reacts with pyrrole to form 1,3-di-(2-pyridyl)-1,3-propanedione. This reaction proceeds via a ring opening metathesis polymerisation. In the second step, 1,3-di-(2-pyridyl)-1,3-propanedione can be reacted with a variety of halides to form new structures that are highly luminescent. These include tris(4′-bromo)pyridine and bis(4′-bromopyrimidine).
