1,6-Diaminopyrene (1,6-DAP) is a nitro compound that has been shown to activate the immune system. 1,6-DAP is a hydrogen bond acceptor and can form a supramolecular structure with other molecules. It is also able to activate the immune system by activating the enzyme heme oxygenase-1. The activation of heme oxygenase-1 leads to an increase in other endogenous compounds such as bilirubin, which are known to have anti-inflammatory properties. 1,6-DAP has been shown to be capable of inducing polymorphism in bacteria such as Salmonella typhimurium. This compound is also used in the synthesis of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs).
