Dimethyl sebacate is a diphenyl ether that forms a stable monomer at room temperature. It can be made by reacting 2-chlorobenzene with ethylene oxide. Dimethyl sebacate has a low solubility in water and organic solvents, and is soluble in hydrochloric acid. This compound is used as an experimental solubility data and as a catalyst or additive in the synthesis of other compounds. Dimethyl sebacate is membrane permeable and lipophilic, making it useful for drug delivery applications. Dimethyl sebacate reacts with general bases such as sodium hydroxide to form an ether linkage. The nitrogen atoms on the compound are easily oxidized and dimethyl sebacate does not react with oxygen at temperatures below 100°C. When heated to 120°C, dimethyl sebacate decomposes into dimethyldioxane, diethyl succinate, hydrogen gas, methyl ethyl
