The mechanism of action for diloxanide furoate is similar to that of sulfonamides, with the exception that it does not inhibit dihydropteroate synthase like sulfonamides do. This drug also has minimal toxicity, which may be due to its low solubility in water and lack of absorption from the gastrointestinal tract.
