Description

2,3-Dimethoxy-5,6-dimethyl-p-benzoquinone (2,3-DMMB) is a natural product that has antimicrobial properties. It has been shown to have a broad spectrum of activity against both gram positive and gram negative bacteria. 2,3-DMMB inhibits the shikimate pathway in bacteria, which is essential for the synthesis of aromatic amino acids. This agent also inhibits fatty acid synthesis by binding to fatty acid synthase and inhibiting the attachment of malonyl coenzyme A to fatty acids. The decarboxylated form of this compound can be synthesized from p-hydroxybenzoic acid and the homologues are active analogues with greater antibacterial activity than 2,3-DMMB.
