Dimethindene is a maleate that has been used to treat allergic reactions and other conditions. Dimethindene exhibits anti-inflammatory activity, which may be due to its inhibition of histamine release. The mechanism of action of dimethindene is not fully understood, but it has been hypothesized that the drug inhibits the H1 receptor on mast cells and basophils by competitively blocking the binding of histamine. Dimethindene also blocks the release of prostaglandins from platelets and leukocytes. It is used in experimental models for allergic rhinitis, where it inhibits histamine-induced nasal obstruction and edema.
