It has been shown to have photocatalytic activity and can be used as an alternative to other chemicals in the manufacture of plastics, dyes, and pharmaceuticals. 3,4-Dihydroxybenzyl alcohol also can act as a radical coupling agent for oxidizing tyrosine residues on proteins and enzymes. This compound has been shown to have antioxidant properties due to its hydroxyl group. 3,4-Dihydroxybenzyl alcohol is soluble in water and can be chromatographically separated into protocatechuic acid by using a solvent system with acetic acid or sodium acetate buffer pH 4.0.
