It prevents the release of iron from the parasite by binding to iron ions and preventing the formation of iron complexes. 3,5-Dichloro-2,6-dihydroxybenzoic acid also inhibits disulfide bond formation in proteins. This inhibition leads to a decrease in protein synthesis. The effect of 3,5-dichloro-2,6-dihydroxybenzoic acid on Leishmania species was confirmed using metabolomics analysis on human blood samples collected from women in Tanzania.
