It can be synthesized by the hydrogenolysis of biphenyl. 4-Diphenylmethylcarbinol has been used in the Raney-type process for the production of aluminum from bauxite and as a catalyst in the dehydrating reaction. This compound has also been used as a reagent for the synthesis of enantiomers and as a solvent for acetonitrile.
