Description :
1,9-Dibromononane is a colorless liquid that has been used as an intermediate in organic synthesis. It reacts with Grignard reagents to form 1,3-dibromopropane and 1,2-dibromoethane. This process can be conducted at low temperatures and requires an activation energy of 40 kcal/mol. The presence of the ethyl group on the bromine molecule increases the reactivity of 1,9-dibromononane because it allows for a greater number of hydrogen bonds. The dipole associated with this molecule also increases its reactivity. 1,9-Dibromononane is a toxic substance that can lead to environmental pollution when released into the atmosphere or water supply.
