1,1-Dichlorotetrafluoroethane (R-114) is a nonflammable refrigerant that has a high absorption of ultraviolet radiation. R-114 is used in air conditioning and refrigeration systems. It has an average global warming potential of 0.053 and emits less chlorine than other chlorofluorocarbons. The activation energies for the reaction are found to be very low at 10.7 KJ/mol, which indicates that the reaction is exothermic and proceeds through an elementary step mechanism rather than a chain process. Kinetic data shows that hydrogen fluoride is not involved in the reaction, but chloride ions are required as catalysts for this chemical reaction to take place.
