Ethyl 2,4-dichloroquinoline-3-carboxylate (EDCQ) is a white solid that has a molecular weight of 219.2 and a melting point of 137-138°C. It is an oxychloride with chains that crystallizes in the monoclinic system. The crystal structure consists of hydrogen bonds and dihedral angles. EDCQ is prepared by refluxing phosphorus oxychloride with quinoline in the presence of finely powdered potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide. EDCQ decomposes at 140°C on heating and reacts violently with water, alcohols, amines, halogenated hydrocarbons, nitriles, chlorides, and other halogenated compounds.
