3-Ethylbenzaldehyde is a natural compound that is found in the essential oils of plants such as Capsicum annuum and Cinnamomum zeylanicum. The compound has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. 3-Ethylbenzaldehyde has also been reported to have osteogenic activity in cells derived from bone marrow. The compound binds to fatty acids, which may be linked to its ability to inhibit cell growth and induce apoptosis. 3-Ethylbenzaldehyde has been used as a bioassay for the presence of fatty acids in laminar magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) studies on cordata.
