5-Ethynylpyridin-2-ol is a pharmaceutical used in the treatment of HIV infection. It inhibits the activity of reverse transcriptase and other enzymes that are involved in the replication of HIV. 5-Ethynylpyridin-2-ol is a non-nucleoside inhibitor that binds reversibly to a region near the active site of the enzyme, preventing RNA synthesis and causing cell death.
5-Ethynylpyridin-2-ol has been shown to be effective against some types of bacterial infections, such as tuberculosis.
