Ethyl 3-hydroxy-3-methylbutanoate is a volatile compound that belongs to the group of alcohols. It is an ester that is soluble in organic solvents and has a fruity odor. In plants, this compound has been shown to inhibit the activity of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases, which are enzymes that break down cyclic nucleotides. The inhibition of these enzymes leads to an increase in cyclic nucleotides, which are important for cellular activities such as vasodilation and transmission of nerve impulses.
