1-Ethyl-5-mercaptotetrazole is an alkali metal. It is a ligand that forms complexes with cefotaxime to stabilize emulsions and reduce the formation of crystals. 1-Ethyl-5-mercaptotetrazole stabilizes the active form of cefotaxime against oxidation by free radicals. 1-Ethyl-5-mercaptotetrazole also interacts with other drugs in the liver microsomal preparations, such as tetrazole, which are used as stabilizers in pharmaceutical formulations. The stability of 1-Ethyl-5-mercaptotetrazole's complexes with cefotaxime depends on the pH and presence of sodium ions. This compound has been shown to have antibiotic properties, but it does not have any antibacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex.
