N-Ethyl-N-methylaniline is a chemical compound that is used as an enzyme inhibitor. It is a reagent in the synthesis of N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine and other pharmaceuticals. It has been shown to inhibit transcription and polymerase chain reactions that are dependent on the presence of amines, such as those catalyzed by RNA polymerase. N-Ethyl-N-methylaniline shows stereoselective inhibition of enzymes containing phosphorus pentachloride, which may be due to its ability to react with the phosphorus atom in the enzyme active site. This chemical also inhibits phospholipid biosynthesis and can act as an analog for methylene blue.
