Ethylene glycol-bis(succinic acid N-hydroxysuccinimide ester) is a chemical compound that has been shown to inhibit mitotic checkpoint in cells. This inhibition may be due to the generation of reactive oxygen species by the reaction of succinic acid, which is an intermediate metabolite, with ethylene glycol. The reaction between succinic acid and ethylene glycol generates reactive oxygen species that can lead to mitochondrial dysfunction and neuronal death. This chemical inhibits mitotic checkpoint by binding to lysine residues on the kinetochore protein complex that is responsible for holding chromosomes together during mitosis. It also binds to receptor molecules on the cell surface, such as peptide hormones, that regulate cell division. Ethylene glycol-bis(succinic acid N-hydroxysuccinimide ester) has been used in experiments involving monoclonal antibodies and peptide hormones in fat cells.
