Epsiprantel has been shown to have an effect on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for endoparasites in rats. This drug also has a significant effect on the active substances of these parasites. Epsiprantel is not effective against adult worms, but it can be used as a prophylactic treatment for young animals. Epsiprantel binds to a carbonyl group on the parasite's outer surface, which causes paralysis and death of the parasite by interfering with its water-surface breathing mechanism. The active substance may be excreted in the urine or feces within six hours after administration.
