Ent-pazufloxacin mesylate is an iontophoretic formulation of the antibiotic pazufloxacin mesilate. It is used in research to study the permeation of antibiotics through human skin. Ent-pazufloxacin mesylate has been shown to be effective against a broad range of bacteria, including those that are resistant to other antibiotics such as methicillin and vancomycin. The mechanism for this activity is not yet known but may involve the hydrolysis reaction of ent-pazufloxacin mesylate into pazufloxacin, which inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to the 16S ribosomal RNA. There are also structural similarities between ent-pazufloxacin mesylate and vancomycin, which may account for its effectiveness against these bacteria.
