Ethyl 2-aminopyridine-3-carboxylate is a white to yellow crystalline solid that is soluble in polar organic solvents such as formamide and dimethyl sulfoxide. It can be recrystallized from ethyl bromoacetate, formamide, and anhydrous sodium carbonate. The compound is a quinoline derivative synthesized by the Wittig reaction of ethyl bromoacetate and methyl acetoacetate with n-hexane as the solvent. This product has been used to study platelet function in blood plasma because it inhibits the aggregation of platelets in vitro. Ethyl 2-aminopyridine-3-carboxylate also inhibits the synthesis of proteins in bacteria and is used as an antimicrobial agent.
