Ergostine is an organic acid that is synthesized by plants as a defense mechanism against herbivores. It has been found to have anti-cancer, endometriosis, and cancer-related activities. Ergostine is also used in the treatment of bacterial vaginosis and perennial ryegrass staggers. This compound inhibits the growth of Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Clostridium perfringens. Ergostine also inhibits the growth of Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium.
Ergostine can be used for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis because it disrupts bacterial cell membranes and causes leakage of intracellular material from the cells.
